duck hunting

Happy New Year!

I said hello to the new year this morning around 8am after a good night's sleep. We entertained the idea of going downtown last night to join in the revelry, but were quite tired from three consecutive mornings of 5:30am duck hunting and couldn't bear the thought of being in the cold an extra minute longer. We hit the down comforter laden sack around 10:30pm after a hot meal and snoozed on through the calendar change.

Warren, Ryan, Jared, Josh, and I were at Reelfoot Lake from Saturday evening until Tuesday afternoon. We hunted on Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday from 5:30am until 3pm. I really quite enjoyed myself. I love watching the sun come up and the birds migrate across the sky in formation. I love watching nature work its magic on schedule.
I also discovered that I like duck hunting. There are plenty of ducks so shooting them doesn't feel terrible. We got a nice hot breakfast around 8:30am and then plates of cinnamon rolls around 11:30am. I am definitely a fan of both good breakfast and hot cinnamon rolls. I've been turkey hunting and deer hunting with Jared and both of those require that the hunter be painstakingly quiet. Duck hunting does not. Between five hunters and three guides, we made plenty of noise and talked for hours. I am all about hunting where I can chat it up.

Plus, I hunted next to this little buddy. How cute is he in his rabbit-lined hat?

How cute are we both in our rabbit-lined hats? I'll admit that my hat is not the cutest on the market and I don't look like one of the female hunters on TV with the curled blonde hair flowing out from under the cap and the eye lashes coated with mascara. No, I wear the warmest clothes possible and my nose is always red. But, I despise being cold and will not compromise warmth for beauty. I also love not getting fixed up for several days in a row. That's a vacation in and of itself.

I'm glad I enjoyed the duck hunting because the above husband of mine absolutely adores duck hunting. His first word as a child was "duck." Not even kidding.
