The lasso move

Jared and I spent Father's Day weekend with my parents. It was such fun to be with my daddy. He is feeling good. He is skinny as ever, but eating well. He's wearing shoes (Can I get a gasp from the audience, please?!?!?!).

Guess what we did together? Oh well, we went to the Mac store and bought an iPad each. Score. See, here's how it happened. Dad went out to Arizona to see his sister. His connecting flight got canceled and he got in line at the service desk to make a new reservation. He stood in line for several hours and then didn't get a flight out that day or the next day. He had to wait until the day after and therefore, missed almost two days of his vacation. The flights had filled up! He realized that not everyone was standing in line at the service desk, but were on their iPhone and iPads booking new flights in minutes. Dad was determined to remedy the situation. So, we went to the Mac store. I was actually going to get a new laptop for my one year anniversary gift. However, the iPad is super cool, super light, and super, well, super everything. So, we each got an iPad and I'm a bit disappointed in me, but excited for him that my father has the same technology as me and he's forty years older. Go dad!

The following picture shows us playing on his iPad and bidding on ebay.

One more thing. We went to church on Sunday. My parents go to First Baptist Church of Nashville, TN. It is a gorgeous, formal church with a full choir, pipe organ, and grand piano. The music is phenomenal. My parents came from the Seventh Day Adventist Church. In the SDA church there is a lot of amen-ing. Well, Dad showed up at FBC and continued to amen when moved. I remember this well because no one else in the entire FBC sanctuary uttered a word and it was like crickets after my Dad gave a hearty amen. Buddy, you should hear those Nashville Baptists now! Fifteen years later and they are amen-ing away. You can't even hear my Dad's voice in the mix.
Well, he's working on a new tradition. We were singing a wonderful, "rowdy" hymn on Sunday. The kind of hymn that has the women singing one part and the men another while the pianist works it and the organist starts breaking a sweat. Whenever Dad got excited, he started doing a lasso motion with his free hand, the one not holding the hymnal. It was awesome. It got lots of attention. Give it fifteen years and FBC goers are going to be lassoing fools. Amen? Amen! The funny part is that I don't think Dad even noticed. I have always loved that about my father. He doesn't care much, if anything, about what other people think. He's too busy enjoying his own life.
Amen.
