old stuff

I've been cleaning out my computer. Getting rid of old documents from college and graduate school. Going through old photos. I've stumbled across some treasures like the photos I posted yesterday. I found this little letter from 5 years ago. Do you know Flat Stanley? I hope so. I've never had more fun with a school project than the two times I got to be the recipient of Flat Stanley from Mike and Ryan.

Dear Mike,

Thank you for allowing Flat Stanley to visit me. He has been a delightful companion and I will miss him when he leaves.

Flat Stanley has learned a lot about the place where I live, Birmingham, Alabama. Birmingham is the largest city in Alabama. Birmingham was founded in 1871, just after the U.S. Civil War, as an industrial enterprise. It was named after Birmingham, the major industrial city of England.

I live in Birmingham because there are good schools here. I went to college at Birmingham-Southern College and I am now in graduate school at the University of Alabama. Flat Stanley went to class with me yesterday and helped with my homework throughout the week. Enclosed is a photograph of him studying at my desk at school and also, working on the computer.

One of the things I like to do is go hiking. We have some beautiful parks in Birmingham. Flat Stanley and I went hiking at Oak Mountain. We hiked 10 miles with some friends and we all needed naps afterwards. Again, there are some photographs enclosed of Flat Stanley and me enjoying the beautiful weather and nature trails. I also included a couple of beautiful leaves that Flat Stanley found as well as a postcard of another park I love to visit named Aldridge Gardens.

Speaking of weather, the weather here is very different from Utah. We have very hot and humid summers, a nice fall, a mild winter, and a lovely spring. We rarely get any snow and there is definitely no skiing. Flat Stanley said he is anxious to get back to Utah so he can hit the slopes.

You will also see a picture of Flat Stanley enjoying a chicken sandwich from Chic-fil-a. Chic-fil-a is a popular fast food restaurant in the South. The South is also known for its southern foods like fried chicken, mashed potatoes, and collard greens. The food is very yummy, but not always very healthy.

College football is a very big deal here in Birmingham. There is an intense rivalry between the University of Auburn and the University of Alabama. This year, the University of Auburn won the big game.

Again, thank you for sending Flat Stanley for a visit. I hope he has a safe trip back to Utah. He may need a nap when he returns since he has been so busy.

I love you,
Aunt Alison
